Benefits of a Fire Pit

October 31, 2024

This month we have been so excited to begin using our fire pits at the beach and at the House of Dun.

There's something magical about gathering around a fire pit under the open sky. The warmth of the flames, the crackling sound of burning wood, and the glow of the fire create a timeless experience that connects us to nature. For families, spending time around a fire pit in a natural environment can offer a range of benefits for both children and families. But beyond roasting marshmallows and telling stories, using fire pits in natural settings can play an important role in fostering growth, building relationships, and deepening an appreciation for the great outdoors.

In today’s world of screens and indoor activities, it's more important than ever for children to have opportunities to connect with the natural world. A fire pit in an outdoor setting is the perfect place to engage your child’s senses with the natural environment. Whether it’s the smell of burning wood, the sight of flames dancing in the night, or the sounds of nature around them, kids learn to be present in the moment and appreciate the environment. This connection fosters a deeper respect for nature and can inspire curiosity about the outdoors.

A fire pit offers a unique opportunity to teach children about fire safety in a controlled, supervised setting. By involving your child in the process of building, maintaining, and extinguishing the fire, you’re helping them learn valuable lessons about responsibility, safety, and respect for fire. This hands-on experience reinforces the importance of caution and following safety protocols, such as keeping a safe distance, handling fire tools properly, and ensuring the fire is completely out before leaving.

We are so excited to now build on our learning as we develop further confidence in using a fire pit outdoors. As you can see we have also been using SIMOA to help keep us safe.

At our November staff meeting, staff in the Pre-school room demonstrated how they are using fire pits outdoors to other staff. Pam made everyone a cosy hot chocolate to enjoy whilst toasting marshmallows.
